Lime Putty Plastering Need

Lime Putty Plastering Need

Recently, I’ve had my eyes opened to the fact that there’s a serious need for craftsmen to supply a quality service applying lime putty plaster and lime plaster in the old homes renovation niche`.

With more rules and regulations being introduced for owners of ‘listed’ buildings, or buildings within conservation areas, it’s apparent that there is a very real shortage of a skilled workforce in this are. Maybe because lime putty can be a very awkward material to work with.

If the craftsmen aren’t familiar with the process, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed by the ‘patience’ needed when working with traditional lime plastering.

Materials need to be left, often days, to breath and settle to the correct consistency, or applying the lime plaster/ lime putty will become a very messy job, and the build up and levelling to a flat surface almost impossible if not left long enough.

However. The satisfaction of looking at, and feeling the organic finish of lime plaster is unmatched within the industry. Unless you refer to ‘marbling’ of course, but that’s a very different niche` and indeed ‘taste’.

Modern plasters have been introduced ‘not’ because of their superiority, but for their ‘efficiency’ in getting the work finished much faster, allowing the work to proceed at a ‘commercial’ pace. But for a ‘quality’ finish, lime plaster / lime putty finishing is well worth the patience, and of course regrettably, the cost.
